500 Km tune-up - the bike rolls on
by Steve ~ April 28th, 2007. Filed under: Maintenance & Repairs.Spent half an hour this morning giving the Bike of Doom its 500 Km inspection. No adjustments necessary other than cleaning and lubing the drivetrain. Took the bike for a spin and it was silent. Amazing what a little cleaning and oil will do.
I have noticed an intermittent, very slight knock, either in the pedals or the bottom bracket. Can’t quite tell which it is, yet. I don’t want to invest in bottom bracket tools until I know for certain, though suppose I should just bite the bullet and buy them knowing that one way or another I’m going to need them down the line. In any case, I’ll let the knock play out a little longer. It’s intermittent, doesn’t interfere with riding, and doesn’t bother me yet.
On the “odd maintenance” side, I removed the SuperCycle stickers from the bike. It’s now an anonymous blue mountain bike. Kate’s going to make me some stencils so I can spray paint “Bike of Doom” on the sides, or something innocuous like “B.O.D.” Or perhaps “bikeofdoom.com”. Hey, nothing like turning your commuter bike into a sandwich board advertising medium!

Congrats on the bottom bracket service. You are proving to be a resourceful and persistent bike tester!
Now you can come and sevice the bottom brackets on all 5 of my bikes since I am too lazy to do it myself!!!

Ouch. I once resisted owning more than one bike because the thought of maintaining them was too daunting. As it turns out, I’m actually enjoying keeping three bikes in working order. Add tbe rest of the bikes in the house, and I’m actually keeping 6 bikes on the road. Yikes.
