Bottom bracket noise
by Steve ~ May 4th, 2007. Filed under: Maintenance & Repairs. The noise from the bottom bracket has become persistent. It could still be the pedal. I’ll take a closer look this weekend. I am expecting to purchase the tools required to remove the cranks and to service the bottom bracket. Based on the experience of the other SC1800 rider at Maple Leaf Test Rides, I’m not sure the bottom bracket can be successfully serviced. I may have to replace it with a sealed unit. We’ll see. I’d prefer not to. My goal is to keep this bike running on its factory equipment as long as possible. To be honest, the clicking from the BB or pedals is more of an annoyance than a functional problem. It hasn’t impacted the functioning of the BOD to this point… only my perception of the ride.

At some point the replacement of parts must be considered in light of the purchase price. You might be better off buying “Bike of Doom II”.

Yep. That’s why I’m delaying. That, and big lazy streak. I’d really like to see how long the bike can go on its factory equipment. The knock from the BB comes and goes. I’ll keep an eye on it for now, nothing more.

I disagree. The BB is indeed a weak area of the SC1800 as the shell is going to be badly faced.
Installing a Shimano BB-UN52 68×122 should address this issue. Consdiering the low purchase price, that should give you and open to buy on upgrades from OEM.
Recommend to call the Edmonton MEC store 18006632667 and see if they can procure one for you. The whole thing should run less than $30, of you can install yerself.
Put about 3000k on the original BB and hell yeah it noisy whatever the pedals and wheels still went round. Feels sooooo much better after the upgrade.

I expect that upgrading the bottom bracket would make for a dramatically improved ride experience. However, I’d have to do one of two things. 1 — buy all the tools required to remove the old bottom bracket and install the new sealed BB, as well as buy the sealed unit itself. 2 — Take the bike to a bike shop and have them swap out the old BB and replace with a sealed unit. In either case, I’m probably looking at a repair that costs as much or more than the bike itself. I’m not sure I’m willing to invest that much money in this bike. For that reason, I’m inclined to leave it for now.
