1275 Km - good tires make for good cycling

by Steve ~ July 7th, 2007. Filed under: Riding the Bike.

Thanks to Bike With Mike, the SC1800 is no longer rolling on its cheap factory rubber, but on the used rubber (that doesn’t sound right, does it?) from a nearly decade old Raleigh Rocky. The donated tires were not new, they show some wear, but they are definitely of higher quality than the tires that came with the SC1800. After installing the rear tire, the wheel seemed miraculously true. I guess I did a better job than I thought when I replaced those spokes and straightened the rim.

Now, other things to maintain, clean, or repair. I came up to a stop light the other day, applied the front brake, and kept rolling as if nothing had happened. The pads look fine. The cables are tight enough. I wonder if there’s grease or oil on the rim or pads? I have also noticed that the wheels are not rolling as smoothly as they once did. Could water from that giant puddle have seeped into the hubs? Perhaps time to take them apart and regrease the bearings.

We’ll see. I feel no great compulsion to do the work. The bike still rolls, is reasonably quiet, and gets me where I need to go.

Who am I to ask for more?

I just found your site and love it. I am an entry level cyclist in Toronto but I’m quickly becoming addicted to the passtime.

My women’s version of the $99 Supercycle got stolen yesterday so later today I plan to buy my second Supercycle - this time with a better lock to keep it company.

Just wanted to say hi and tell you that I love the Supercycle too.

Hey, Samantha, that’s great. I mean, great that you’re riding a bike, not that it was stolen! When I first bought the $99 Supercycle, I figured “Who cares if it gets stolen!” Now, though, I’m attached to the thing… it would upset me. That said, it’s easier to get over a $99 loss than it is to get over a $500 loss.

You should report the loss to the police. The bike might be recovered.
