BOD on Holiday — August 8 — 10.9 Km

Having no confidence in the B.O.D., I had two choices. Do no cycling until I return to the city, or buy a couple of new tires. We drove into Dauphin, and I stopped at Black’s Sporting Goods (and Bike Shop), and picked up a couple of Specialized tires with Kevlar flak jacket. $23.95 each, or about $48 for the pair. Add that to the $48 I already spent on the rear wheel, plus the $15 I spent on a freewheel, and you get $111, more than the price I originally paid for the SC1800. Sigh. The only consolation is that these parts will work on my better mountain bike, and I will keep them even after I toss the B.O.D. on the scrap heap. Even with new tires, however, I have little to no confidence in the bike. I took a couple of short spins through town, not wanting to risk a longer ride and the failures that will inevitably occur on the road. Can my Giant Boulder and Jamis Coda Sport really be so much better than the SuperCycle SC1800? Apparently so. Riding Mountain National Park seems to be some kind of crucible that is putting the SC1800 to the ultimate test. If nothing else, I have proven to myself that even I can reach my limit in terms of repair. Right now, I just want to ride a reliable bike. The thought of repairing the SC1800 yet again, no matter how edifying or how good a learning experience, leaves me cold.
