Urbainxavier on a Bike — another SC1800 blog

by Steve ~ August 15th, 2007. Filed under: Other people's bikes.

Just found another SuperCycle 1800 blog, this one from a fellow in Montreal, Quebec. He weighed the costs of a monthly bus pass ($65) against the cost of a Canadian Tire SC1800 ($99) and figured he’d give the bike a try. Like everyone who owns an SC1800 he’s run through his share of repairs, learning how along the way. (I really believe that owning a SuperCycle 1800 is a great way to learn bike repair and maintenance… the damn thing is guaranteed to keep you busy.) I see he’s replaced a spoke or two, trued the wheel, even overhauled the bottom bracket (I think). The blog starts in July of 2007, so it’s not a lot of reading to catch up. He’s also got a photo gallery of a trip he took on the bike. You have to admire that. I love his descriptions of cycling past hotdogs on more expensive bikes. A good read. Good pics. Check it out.

This makes three SC1800 blogs I’m aware of. Bike of Doom, MLC Test Rides, and Urbainxavier on a Bike. I’d take bets that this is the most popular bike in Canada.

Just read the new blog you wrote about. It’s lots of fun. It almost makes me want to get a Supercycle 1800. Almost. Well okay…not even a bit. What a flippin’ unreliable “bike shaped object”. This guy in Quebec will be getting a different bike next summer I think.

This Urbainxavier guy, the Dude at Maple Leaf Test Rides, and myself, have all traveled almost exactly the same path in terms of broken parts for the SC1800: rear wheel, bottom bracket. That’s about it. Neither of the other two seems to have had a problem with tires, though. Personally, I kind of like riding a bike that nobody wants to steal or vandalize. Okay, so “like riding” is maybe a bit strong. Like the Quebec guy says, there’s something twistedly enjoyable about riding a $99 Canadian Tire bike past a roadie or two.
