A new bike for a SuperCycle rider

UrbainXavier, a hardy soul in Montreal, Quebec, has been riding his own Bike of Doom for a few months now… a $99 Canadian Tire SC1800. Like everybody who rides an SC1800 any serious distance, he’s put in his share of repairs and spare parts. The really cool thing about UrbainXavier is that the SuperCycle was his first bike. He discovered cycling on it. He took long trips on it, even a four day tour. He treated it like a good bike and after getting his money’s worth out of it (1,700 Km over the course of the summer), he bought himself a good bike. You can read all about it here.

What I really like about UrbainXavier’s blog is that it’s the story of a guy who actually got hooked on cycling through riding a cheap bike. His rationale for spending only $99 was that he wasn’t sure he was going to like it, and he wanted to keep enough money in his pocket for beer. Two good reasons if you ask me. When it turned out he did really like cycling, he upgraded. Which puts to rest the idea that people who buy cheapo department store bikes will never discover the joy of cycling. The fact is, cycling is fun no matter what kind of crappy bike you’re riding, and if it’s really the activity for you, you’ll figure it out soon enough and buy a good bike.
