Long ride, comfortable rig
by Steve ~ October 16th, 2007. Filed under: Riding the Bike.Mike and I did a reasonably long ride on Sunday, despite the cold. I took the Bike of Doom, which caused Mike to raise his eyebrows. The BOD performed well. Despite its weight and low-quality components, it is by far the most comfortable of all my bikes. I don’t know why that is. I can ride it for hours without any discomfort – no numb hands, no sore butt, no achy back. It’s strange.
My old Raleigh was like that, too. I also find Mike’s Raleigh Rocky a comfortable ride. Perhaps it’s something about Raleigh geometry that suits my British body? Hard to say.
We met another cyclist out at Bird’s Hill quarry. He was riding a Cadilac road bike. Mike had seen one of these things on the Costco website. High-end components from end to end, including carbon fiber forks and chainstays. A nice looking bike, if you don’t mind the Cadilac logo and crest. He mentioned that it cost in the $700 range, ordered online. Not the way I’d prefer to buy a bike, but hey, to each his own. Who am I to criticize? I’m riding a $99 Canadian Tire bike, for God’s sake.
Anyway, a good ride. I’m at that point in the season when I can’t be bothered keeping three bikes maintained and ready for the road. I ride the Bike of Doom every day, I keep it in good working condition, it’s ready to go. I expect it will get a few more long rides in the next little while.

finally, a writer that understands how comfortable the sc 1800 actually is. the pvc grips eliminate sore hands and the raleigh design does allow me to ride indefinitely without pain. it is one of the many virtues of this entry level bike; raleigh did not stint on quality.
