Boringly reliable ride - 2,890 Km

by Steve ~ October 24th, 2007. Filed under: Maintenance & Repairs.

The SC1800 has turned into a boringly reliable ride. I’m putting on 70 Km per week commuting, and another 70 to 100 Km per week in recreational rides, and the thing keeps rolling along. It’s been over 1,000 Km since I had to do a repair worth noting. Bi-weekly lubrication and cleaning seems to do the trick now.

The weather continues to get colder, the morning and evening rides darker. I’m using lights for the morning ride now, sometimes for the evening ride home. There are fewer cyclists on the road. Some mornings I don’t see any. On Sunday, when Mike and I cycled out to Lockport, we didn’t see a single cyclist until the end of the ride, when we got back into the city. That’s unusual. Winter is coming, I guess.

Anyway, sorry I have nothing more entertaining to pass along. Maybe next time.

Damn you, sir! How am I ever going to catch up to you if you keep doing 150km per week?!

You’ll catch up soon enough. The season for recreational riding is almost over in these parts. It’s possible we could have snow on the ground to stay within the next few weeks. If I keep commuting, that will give me 70 Km a week, but I haven’t decided if I’m up for that yet. I commuted through one winter. I needed snowboarding goggles to see. At -40 degrees C the bike was stiff and unresponsive, the wear and tear after 5 months incredible. Anyway, we’ll see.

By the way, very nice and detailed photos of your own 2,000 Km maintenance. I’m amazed your bottom bracket is doing so well. Is it a single piece crank? I installed a sealed unit at 1,749 Km, but I overhauled the cups, spindle and bearings a couple of times prior to that.

Yep, it’s a 1-piece crank. I could have bought a bike with a 3-piece crank for about $40 more, but I like the sturdiness of these old things.

You do have to be a bit more careful about fording puddles though. ;-)

-40 degrees C? I’m getting an ice-cream headache just *THINKING* about that! =:-0
