End of the road for the Bike of Doom?

by Steve ~ November 5th, 2007. Filed under: Riding the Bike.

I’m debating whether or not to continue commuting through winter. It can get brutal around here, not to mention dangerous on roads packed with ice and snow.

I do have a safe route to work, check out the picture above, but the thought of cycling in sub-zero temperatures for six months is not overly appealing (other than in a masochistic, adventurous sort of way), and the only reason I’d do it is to put the Bike of Doom through its paces.

My route in winter.

This is part of my commuting route, along the Assiniboine River… and this is what it will look like in another month.

On the other hand, I have done everything I expected to do with the bike. I anticipated, back in March, riding 2,000 Km on the bike, and I’ve now done 3,000 Km. To me, this cheap bike has proved its worth. If I keep riding through the winter, I’ll put on another 1,000 Km by March. I have no doubt the SC1800 will perform just fine.

Anyway, I’ll decide in the next little while what I’m going to do… keep the experiment going, or shut it down. If I shut it down, I’ll put up a more permanent website with the results, and leave the blog accessible.

I plan (at least I’m saying that now) to be a “fair conditions” winter rider. By that I mean I hope to ride on those few days when the sun is out and the roads are clear. This will likely mean not too often but hopefully it will be enough to stay in shape until spring.

Ah, yes, staying in shape until spring… that’s the dream! I’ll see how long I can tough it out. It’s always a tough slog in the spring, getting back into riding shape. Be nice to have a head start on that.

Easier said than done though. It was -3C today and I was less than enthusiastic even though the roads are still clear. The ride back home was darker but more tolerable.
