About me
My name is Steve George. I live in Winnipeg, Canada. I’m 47 years old, married for 21 years. I have three children, one almost an adult. I am a writer by vocation and, I would have once said, avocation. I began cycling seriously in 2003. Prior to that, I’d cycled only fitfully as an adult, perhaps three or four times a summer.

The thing that kicked me off was my friend, Mike. He bought himself a bike, piddled around on it for a few years then, in 2002, astounded himself by cycling 1,000 Km over the summer. He kept saying that next year he was going to push himself, maybe get as high 1,500 Km. This seemed to me like a cool thing to do, and so, with much cajoling from Mike, I bought a new, better bike (Specialized Hardrock) and started cycling with him. Soon, we had a couple of friends riding with us (Tony and Robbie), and the kilometres were piling up. Before we were halfway through the summer we’d cycled through 1,500 Km, then 2,000 Km.

I was hooked. I did 4,200 Km that year. Prior to that, I doubt I did more than 100 Km or 200 Km in a year. We’ve been cycling together ever since. Last year, our friend Tony moved away, and we cycled less than the year before, but we plan on pushing the envelope again this year.Cycling has become a big part of my life. It’s my primary recreational activity from April through October, ever year. I’m trying to integrate cycling into my everyday life by commuting by bike more seriously than I’ve done before. This weblog is an account of that process.
